Le livre d'essais que Godwin publia en 1831, à soixante-quinze ans : le même homme qui avait écrit la « Justice politique » quarante ans plus tôt, regardant en arrière.

Ce sont une vingtaine d'essais sur des choses particulières — l'éducation des enfants, la santé et l'abattement, les rêves, l'astronomie, la gloire posthume, ce que les livres font à qui les lit, la différence entre la jeunesse et la vieillesse —, écrits avec un calme que son œuvre de jeunesse n'avait pas. Son rationalisme radical s'est tempéré : le Godwin de 1793 soutenait que la raison devait suffire à tout, et celui-ci accorde bien davantage au sentiment, à l'habitude et au hasard. Il gagne à être lu après la « Justice politique », pour voir ce que le temps fit à l'une des intelligences les plus conséquentes de son siècle.
