Celui de Sparte est de Xénophon ; celui d'Athènes, que la tradition lui attribue, est d'une main inconnue qu'on appelle le Vieil Oligarque. Ce second est remarquable parce qu'il attaque la démocratie athénienne tout en admettant qu'elle fonctionne très bien pour ce qu'elle se propose : un adversaire qui argumente vraiment.
