背景と歴史
『アヴェスター』のうちで、現代の読者が思い描く「宗教書」からもっとも遠いのがこの部分だ。そのことは先に言っておくに値する。ヴェンディダード——「悪霊に対する法」——は何よりまず法と儀礼の書である。どのような接触が穢れをもたらすか、遺体をいかに扱うか、どの過ちにどの罰が当たるか、土と水と火はいかに浄められるか、犬はいかに世話されるべきか。関心を惹く点は二つある。並外れて細かい古代イランの法制・社会の記録であること。そして、今なお行われているゾロアスター教の慣行を説明してくれること。『アヴェスター』の古層にして宗教的な核はガーサーであり、それは第三部にある。訳はダルムステテール、一八八〇年。
