背景と歴史
チベット語の題は「中有において聞くことによる解脱」を意味する。この文は遺体のかたわらで声に出して読まれた。死者の意識がそれを聞き、自分がいま見ているものを見分けられるようにである。相次ぐ三つのバルドが描かれる。もろもろの光、寂静の尊格、続いて忿怒の尊格。そして一歩ごとに同じ教えが繰り返される——おまえが見ているものはおまえ自身の心である、恐れるには及ばない。伝承はこれを八世紀のパドマサンバヴァに帰し、十四世紀にカルマ・リンパが発掘したとする。『チベット死者の書』という名は英語版の編者エヴァンズ=ヴェンツのもので、彼は一九二七年、神智学的な序文と、原文が語っていない観念を投げかける註とを付して刊行した。のちにユングが影響力の大きい心理学的註釈を書いたが、そこにもまた彼自身の語彙が持ち込まれている。ここにあるのは仏教の儀礼文であって、死一般についての論考ではない。
