背景と歴史
一六七〇年、著者名を伏せ、偽の出版地を掲げて刊行され、一六七四年に禁書となった。その世紀でもっとも危険な書物であり、同時代人はただちにそれを理解した。全体を支える主張はひとつ——哲学する自由は敬虔をも国家の平和をも脅かさない。それらを破壊するのは、この自由の抑圧のほうである。そこへ至るためにスピノザは、誰もこれほどの厳密さでは行わなかったことをする。聖書を歴史的文書として読むのだ。人間が人間のために書いたものであり、預言は知識ではなく生き生きとした想像力であり、奇跡は何も証明しえない。自然の秩序の外では何も起こらないからである。近代の聖書批評はここから始まる。最終章は政治的帰結を引き出す。契約が譲り渡すのは権力であって、考える能力ではない。ゆえに意見を支配しようとする国家は、自らを傷つける。英訳は一八八三年のエルウィス訳で、当館では四部に分かれている。
