冒頭の一頁は、スピノザの他のどこにも似ていない。富も名誉も快楽も持続する何ものをも与えぬと見てとり、与えるような善を探そうと決めた、という一人称の告白である。続く部分だけでも方法は見てとれる。われわれが知る仕方を分けること——伝聞により、漠然たる経験により、推論により、そして第四に、あるものをその本質によって捉えること——そして、値するのは最後のものだけだと示すこと。この論考は未完のまま残された。スピノザはこれを捨てて『エチカ』を書いた。あちらは方法を説明するのではなく、用いてしまう。だからこそ、ここが最良の入口である。幾何学がすべてを覆ってしまう前に、彼が何を求めていたのかが見える。
