背景と歴史
Jerome made it between 382 and 405, going back to the Hebrew for the Old Testament at a time when the custom was to translate from the Greek. Twelve hundred years of hand copying left divergent versions behind, and the Council of Trent called for a fixed one: the Sixtine edition of 1590 appeared with so many errors that it was withdrawn, and the Clementine of 1592 is the one that lasted. It is the original the Douay-Rheims translates from, and the text quoted by Aquinas, Anselm and the whole of scholasticism.
