背景と歴史
ひそかに、一通ずつ世に出て、たちまち評判になった。パスカルが誰もしなかったことをしたからである。神学論争を学院ラテン語から取り出し、日常のフランス語に、皮肉をこめ、対話の形で置き直したのだ。初めの数通は恩寵を論じる。第四書簡からは決疑論——どんな行為にもそれを許す典拠を見つけ出す技術——を攻め、イエズス会自身の手引書を引いて、みずから馬脚を現させる。書簡は王命によって断罪され焼かれ、一六六〇年には教皇が禁書目録に載せた。近代フランス散文はここに始まる。ヴォルテールはこれを、フランス語の散文で書かれた最初の天才の書と呼んだ。
