背景と歴史
パスカルは一六六二年、三十九歳で世を去り、ついに書かれなかったキリスト教弁証のための断章を数百残した。仕上がった段落もあれば、三語だけのものもある。彼はそれらを束ねて紐で括っており、その括り方が意図された配列の手がかりを与えている。したがって我々が読むものはすべて編者による配列であり、版ごとに配列は異なる。断章番号が版のあいだで一致しないのはそのためで、どの版によるかを必ず記さねばならない。ここに「賭け」があり、「心には理性の知らぬ理がある」があり、考える葦としての人間があり、無限の空間の永遠の沈黙がある。注意：本目録には同一の著作の英訳が二種ある。『Pascal's Pensées』と『The Thoughts of Blaise Pascal』である。誤りではない——別々の版だ——が、知っておきたい。同じ断章が、異なる言葉と異なる番号で二度現れる。
