背景と歴史
この表題は近代のエジプト学者によるもので、エジプト人自身は『日のもとに出ずるの書』と呼んだ。単一の書物でもなければ、本文の定まった聖典でもない。二百余の章から成る蓄えであり、各パピルスはそこから一部を選んで写す。選択は死者の財力に応じて注文され、支払われた。テーバイの書記アニのものは、現存するうちでもっとも長く、挿絵の優れたものの一つである。中心となるのは第一二五章、審判の場面だ。死者の心臓がマアトの羽根と秤にかけられ、そこで死者は「否定告白」——自分がしなかったことの一覧——を唱える。ウォリス・バッジの一八九五年の訳はこの書を西洋に広めたが、すでに大きく乗り越えられている。その時代の歴史的資料としては信頼できるが、今日の文献学的な読みとしては信頼できない。
