背景と歴史
本目録に『ビーグル号航海記』としても載っているのと同一の作品であり、そのことは言っておきたい。ダーウィンが二冊書いたように見えては困るからだ。刊行時の題はこちらで、『航海記』のほうが通用するようになったのは後年である。初版は一八三九年、一八四五年の第二版は重要な箇所が書き改められている。引用にあたっては必ず用いた版を明示しなければならない。両者は同じことを述べていないのだから。

This second edition is dedicated with grateful pleasure, as an acknowledgment that the chief part of whatever scientific merit this journal and the other works of the author may possess, has been derived from studying the well-known and admirable PRINCIPLES OF GEOLOGY. PREFATORY NOTICE TO THE ILLUSTRATED EDITION.
