背景と歴史
キケロは前四五年、娘トゥリアを亡くした年にこれを書いた。伝記的な添え物ではない。この書は、不幸がすでに起きてしまったあとで哲学は役に立つのかを問う。しかも問うているのは、まさにそれを試している最中の人間なのだ。ストア派、エピクロス派、アカデメイア派の議論を集めながらどの学派にも属さず、ギリシア哲学がラテン語で西方に届いた経路の一つでもある。用いられている語彙は、翻訳のためにキケロ自身が作り出さねばならなかったものだ。
