弁論家は何を知っていなければならないかを論じた対話篇。キケロの答えは厳しい。技術だけでは足りず、法・歴史・哲学が要る。論ずる事柄を知らぬ者は、何についても善く語りえないからである。

背景と歴史

前五五年に書かれ、前九一年を舞台とし、クラッススとアントニウスに語らせる。二人は前世代の弁論家で、キケロは若き日にその弁論を聞いていた。政治から遠ざけられていた時期の作であり、修辞学の手引書――若書きの『発想論』を含む――への訂正という面をもつ。彼自身、その若書きを未熟で不十分なものと見なすようになった。
