背景と歴史
この著作は千年以上ものあいだ失われていた。一八一九年、アンジェロ・マイがヴァチカンの重ね書き写本のなかに、アウグスティヌスの詩篇註解の下層からこれを発見した。羊皮紙を再利用するためにキケロが削り取られていたのである。復元された本文はきわめて不完全で、欠落がそのまま読み取れる。例外は末尾の「スキピオの夢」で、マクロビウスが註解を書いたおかげで独立して伝わり、本の残りが存在しなかった中世を通じて読み継がれた。
