背景と歴史
グリーンとグロウズによる一八七四〜七五年の四巻本のうち、本目録には第一巻と第二巻がある。この二巻に収められているのが『人間本性論』である。ヒュームが二十八歳で刊行し、彼自身の言によれば「印刷機から死産して落ちた」書だ。すべてがここにある。あらゆる観念は印象に由来するという主張。因果の分析——我々が観察するのは必然的な結合ではなく、恒常的な連接にすぎず、それを期待するよう教えるのは習慣である。実体としての自我という観念への攻撃。そして「である」と「べきである」の区別。これが二世紀にわたる道徳論議を整えた。第三巻と第四巻には諸論説と二つの『探究』——同じ内容を後年より読みやすく述べ直したもの——が収められている。その二巻は本目録にないが、二つの『探究』と『論説集』はそれぞれ独立した項目として目録にある。
