背景と歴史
コンスタンティノープル駐在の教皇使節であった五七九年から五八五年ごろ、修道士たちに語った講話から生まれ、のちにグレゴリウス自身が改訂した。第三の読み、すなわち道徳的な読みがもっとも広い影響を残した。中世が悪徳と美徳を語った語彙の多くはここに発している。長大な書物であり、通読するためではなく、繰り返し立ち返るために書かれている。
