背景と歴史
もっとも重みをもったのはこの部分である。ここで書物は道徳生活論へと転じ、のちに中世へ、さらに何らかの経路をたどってダンテにまで届いた主要な悪徳の一覧が現れる。それが何であるかは忘れずにおきたい。机上で書かれた理論ではなく、修道士の共同体を前にした講解であり、のちに改訂されたものだ。語調は、顔を知っている相手に語りかける者のそれである。
