グロティウスが獄中で書いたキリスト教弁護。初めは自国の船乗りのためにオランダ語の韻文で書かれ、のちにラテン語に改められた。
背景と歴史
ラテン語の表題は「De veritate religionis Christianae」、一六二七年。当初の意図は実際的だった。オランダの船乗りが交易先でムスリムや異教徒と話すときの論拠を与えることである。ゆえに調子はスコラ的ではなく、明快で整っている。方法もまた、教会の権威から出発せず、その権威を認めない対話相手でも認めうるところから出発する。二世紀のあいだ、ヨーロッパでもっとも多く訳された護教書であった。アラビア語、ペルシア語、漢語の版がある。前提を共有しない相手のために作られていたからこそである。グロティウスは『戦争と平和の法』のほうで知られるが、二書には同じ心の習慣がある。
