背景と歴史
フィヒテは人類の歴史を、理性との関わりによって五つの時代に分ける。本能としての理性の時代、外的権威の時代、あらゆる権威からの解放の時代——彼は自分の時代をここに置く——、学の時代、そして理性に従って生きる術の時代。第三の時代を彼は「完成された罪深さの状態」と呼ぶ。ここに批判の核心がある。あらゆる権威を壊してしまいながら、まだ自らの知には至っていない時代。それゆえ何ものをも信じない時代である。公開講演であり、『知識学』を読んでいなくても追える。『知識学』の難しさはまったく別の次元だ。三年後には『ドイツ国民に告ぐ』が来る。同書も本文庫にある。
