アイルランドで住み込みの家庭教師をしていたころ、まだ何ひとつで知られていなかったころに書かれた。主人公は家の義理で結婚し、自分の生と呼べるものは結婚の外にしか見つけられない。彼女の仕事全体の主題はすでにここにある。のちにそれを担うことになる哲学的な議論だけがまだない。
