背景と歴史
もう一つの『エッダ』と混同してはならない。こちらは作者不詳の詩である。本目録に収めたスノッリ・ストゥルルソンのものは散文であり、彼が語られる出来事の三百年後に書いた手引書だ。これらの詩篇はほぼすべて、ただ一つの写本『王の写本（コデックス・レギウス）』によって伝わっており、その写本は一六四三年まで行方不明だった。つまり、われわれの知る北欧神話は、偶然姿を現した一冊の書物に大きく依存している。
