背景と歴史
プロクロスがこれを書いたのは五世紀、エウクレイデスから八百年のちのことだ。値打ちは二重である。哲学としては、今なお争われている立場を擁護する。数学の対象は世界の事物でも取り決めでもなく、魂がすでに有している理（ことわり）の投影として構想力のうちに存在する、というのだ。文献としては「幾何学者目録」を含む。エウクレイデス以前の幾何学史の概要で、失われたエウデモスの著作に由来する。ギリシア数学の始まりについて我々が知ることは、ほとんどこれで尽きる。この数ページがなければ、数学者としてのタレスもピュタゴラスも今よりさらに霞んでいたであろう。訳はトマス・テイラー、一七八八年。
