本書はラルフ・T・H・グリフィスによる韻文訳で、一八七〇年から一八七四年にかけて刊行された。『ラーマーヤナ』に単一の定本はない。北方系・ベンガル系・南方系など複数の伝本が伝わり、内容は完全には一致しない。グリフィスが訳したのはそのうちの一つであり、正確に引用するにはどの伝本かを知る必要がある。
