この英訳は、ドイツ語では二巻であるものを三冊に配分している。一八一八年の本体と、二十六年後の一八四四年にショーペンハウアーが加えた補遺の巻である。補遺は付け足しの類ではない。本体と同じ長さがあり、彼の思想はしばしばそちらのほうがよく読める。もはや構成そのものを誰かに納得させる必要がないところで書いているからだ。彼自身、全体を二度読むよう求めていた。
