背景と歴史
リードは冒頭でこう述べる。ヒュームを読んで、その結論が誰もが認めている一つの前提から正しく導かれていることが分かった。ならば偽なのはその前提のほうにちがいない、と。本書はその論証を具体的な事例ごとに運んだものだ。嗅覚に一章、味覚に一章、聴覚に一章、触覚に一章、そして視覚に四章。そのいずれにおいても、感覚と知覚とは同じものではないこと、そして我々が知覚しているのは観念ではなく対象であることを示す。視覚および距離の知覚についての分析は、のちの実験心理学に影響を与えた。リードのより大部な二著——『知的能力』と『能動的能力』——は本文庫にあり、いずれも本書より後の作である。
