前著と対をなす一巻、一七八八年刊。あちらが「知ること」を扱ったのに対し、こちらは「為すこと」を扱う。ここでリードは自由と道徳についての説を述べる。
背景と歴史
自由をめぐる中心の議論は、行為者因果というものだ。行為は、玉が別の玉を突くように先行する欲求によって引き起こされるのではない。それを引き起こす行為者がいるのであって、これは物理的な引き起こし方とは別の引き起こし方である。これなくしては誰かに責任を問うことに意味がない、とリードは説く。道徳の部では、義務の諸原理はそれ自体で明らかである——認識における常識の諸原理がそうであるように——と論じ、ヒュームに真向から反対する。理性は情念の奴隷ではなく、正しいこととは我々の気に入ることではない。リードの二巻は一緒に読まれるように書かれた。一方だけを読むのは、半分だけを見ることである。
