ソローの最初の書、一八四九年。一八三九年に兄ジョンと二人でした二週間の舟旅の記録を、七日間に縮めたものである。
背景と歴史
ウォールデンの小屋で書かれた。ほんとうのきっかけは旅ではない。ジョンは一八四二年、破傷風で急に、むごたらしく死んだ。この書はソローがそこへ帰っていくための手立てなのだ。彼はそれをどこにも書いていない。兄はただ「わたしの連れ」としてしか現れない。悲しみはいたるところにあり、どの一文にもない。水の上の一日一日が、友情について、詩について、インドの聖典について、キリスト教について、そして谷のインディアンの歴史についての脱線の糸となる。商売としては完全な失敗であった。千部のうち七百部あまりを自分で買い戻さねばならず、日記にこう書いた——わたしは九百巻の蔵書をもっている。うち七百巻は自分で書いたものだ、と。『ウォールデン』はそのあとに来た。
