背景と歴史
ソローの日記こそが彼のほんとうの仕事なのだが、それを知る人はごく少ない。二十歳から死の間際まで二十四年にわたって書き継がれ、およそ二百万語に及ぶ。生前に公にしたすべてを合わせた量の十倍を超える。内面をつづる日記でも、走り書きの帳面でもない。見たものの日々の記録である——どの植物が何日に花をつけたか、池がいつ凍ったか、どの鳥がいつ戻ってきたか——そこに哲学的な思索が混じり、彼の書いた最良の散文に数えられる頁が混じる。彼の著書はここから出てきた。『ウォールデン』はこの材料からの蒸留物である。何十年も続けられた植物と結氷の記録は、今日、気候変動を測るために使われている。彼には予見しようのなかったことだ。注意：本目録にあるのは日記のうち二巻であり、全体ではない。
