ヴォルテリーヌ・ド・クレイルの論説・講演・詩を集めた没後の一巻。エマ・ゴールドマンとアレクサンダー・バークマンが一九一四年に編んだ。

背景と歴史

もっとも多く引かれるのは「形容詞のないアナキズム」だ。自由な社会が共産主義的になるか、相互主義的になるか、個人主義的になるかを、あらかじめ決める必要はない。それは経験が定めるべきであって、言い張れば運動を早すぎる時期に割ってしまう、と説く。ほかに、婚姻を経済的な制度として論じた「性の隷属」、暴力の問題を検討した「直接行動」がある。ド・クレイルは自由思想の側から出て、ヘイマーケット事件の被告たちの処刑ののちアナキストとなり、貧しく病みながら四十五歳まで生きた。ゴールドマンは彼女を、アメリカのアナキズムが生んだもっとも才ある女性と評した。二人とも本文庫にあり、並べて読む値打ちがある。考えが同じではなかったからだ。
