一七九三年の書の第一巻。ゴドウィンはこの語を用いないまま、哲学的アナキズムをここに基礎づけた。統治はつねに悪である、当面それが必要であるとしても——というのがその主張だ。
背景と歴史
議論は徹底して理性主義的である。人が理性によって完成へ向かいうるのなら、納得させるかわりに服従させる制度はすべて、人を押しとどめている。ゆえに彼が批判するのは国家だけではない。蓄積された所有も、約束も、さらには婚姻さえも批判の対象となる。いずれも将来の判断を縛る取り決めだからである。本書はフランス革命に対する英国の反動のただ中に出た。伝えるところでは、発禁を免れたのは値が三ギニーもしたためで、それを払える者に危険はあるまいと政府が判断したからだという。シェリーに影響を与えた——のちに彼は娘婿となる。妻はメアリ・ウルストンクラフトであり、彼女も本文庫にある。
