De què tracta

El «Sutra del lotus de la llei veritable», el text mes influent del budisme mahayana a l'Asia oriental, en la traduccio de Kern per als «Sacred Books of the East».

Context i història

Compost en sanscrit segurament entre els segles I i III, i conegut sobretot per la traduccio xinesa de Kumarajiva del 406, que es la que va fer historia. La tesi que el va fer decisiu es la del «vehicle unic»: els diferents ensenyaments del Buda no son doctrines rivals sino mitjans adaptats a la capacitat de qui escolta, i tots porten al mateix lloc. D'aqui la idea dels «mitjans habils» i les paraboles famoses —la casa en flames, el fill prodig—, que son la manera com el sutra ho explica. Sobre aquest text es van fundar les escoles Tiantai a la Xina i Tendai i Nichiren al Japo. La traduccio de Kern es del 1884 i tradueix del sanscrit, no del xines: llegeix una tradicio diferent de la que va formar l'Asia oriental.
