Wovon es handelt
Band XLIX der „Sacred Books of the East“, der drei Hauptschriften des Mahayana vereinigt: das Diamant-Sutra, das Herz-Sutra und die beiden Sukhavativyuha.
Kontext und Geschichte
Es sind drei sehr verschiedene Dinge in einem Bande. Die beiden ersten gehören zur Literatur der „Vollkommenheit der Weisheit“: das Diamant-Sutra ist ein kurzes Gespräch, in dem der Buddha eine nach der andern die Kategorien auflöst, mit denen der Schüler die Lehre zu fassen sucht; das Herz-Sutra ist noch kürzer — etwa zweihundertfünfzig Wörter im Sanskrit — und enthält die Formel „Form ist Leerheit, Leerheit ist Form“, wohl der meistrezitierte buddhistische Text der Welt. Die Sukhavativyuha gehören einer anderen Überlieferung an: sie beschreiben Amitabhas Reines Land und das Gelübde, das es trägt, und sind die Grundlage des Buddhismus des Reinen Landes, der verbreitetsten Gestalt in Ostasien. Die Übersetzungen stammen von Max Müller und Takakusu, 1894.

22. Miyi also, holding him in her womb, like a line of clouds holding a lightning-flash, relieved the people around her from the sufferings of poverty by raining showers of gifts. 23.
