Le texte s'est constitué pendant la période chinoise des Royaumes combattants (Ve-IIIe siècles av. J.-C.), quand la guerre cessa d'être l'affaire des nobles pour devenir celle d'États entiers. L'attribution à un général nommé Sun Wu est traditionnelle et contestée. Il s'agit ici de la traduction anglaise de Lionel Giles (1910), celle qui fit connaître le livre hors de Chine.
