संदर्भ और इतिहास
संस्कृत में इसकी रचना संभवतः पहली से तीसरी शताब्दी के बीच हुई, पर प्रसिद्धि सबसे अधिक कुमारजीव के 406 के चीनी अनुवाद से मिली — इतिहास उसी ने बनाया। जिस प्रतिज्ञा ने इसे निर्णायक बनाया वह है 'एकयान': बुद्ध के भिन्न-भिन्न उपदेश परस्पर विरोधी सिद्धांत नहीं, बल्कि सुनने वाले की क्षमता के अनुरूप गढ़े गए उपाय हैं, और सभी एक ही स्थान पर ले जाते हैं। यहीं से 'उपायकौशल्य' की धारणा आती है, और वे प्रसिद्ध दृष्टांत — जलता हुआ घर, खोया हुआ पुत्र — जिनके सहारे सूत्र यह समझाता है। इसी ग्रंथ पर चीन में तिआनताई और जापान में तेंदाई तथा निचिरेन संप्रदाय खड़े हुए। कर्न का अनुवाद 1884 का है और संस्कृत से है, चीनी से नहीं: वह उस परंपरा से भिन्न परंपरा पढ़ता है जिसने पूर्वी एशिया को गढ़ा।
