背景与流传

梵文原典大约撰成于公元一至三世纪;而真正造成历史的,是鸠摩罗什四〇六年的汉译。使它成为关键的,是“一乘”之说:佛所说的种种法门并非互相抵触的教义,而是随听者根器而设的方便,最终同归一处。由此有“方便”之说,以及那些著名的譬喻——火宅、穷子——经中正是借它们来说明此理。中国的天台宗、日本的天台宗与日莲宗,皆依此经而立。科恩的译本成于一八八四年,所据为梵本而非汉本:它所读的,是与塑造了东亚的那一传统不同的另一个传统。
