1883至1885年间分四部一气写成,大部分完成于瑞士阿尔卑斯山中锡尔斯-玛利亚的夏天。其时尼采刚与瓦格纳决裂,又经历了露·莎乐美事件,写作时几乎没有读者:第四部只私印了四十册,因为没有出版商愿意接手。全书刻意戏仿圣经文体,承载着他最著名也最遭误解的思想——超人与永恒轮回。它身后的声名巨大而常常有毒:他没有哪本书被引用得这么多,也被歪曲得这么狠。
