Contexte et histoire
Cette traduction anglaise répartit en trois tomes ce qui en allemand fait deux volumes : le livre de 1818 et le volume de compléments que Schopenhauer y ajouta en 1844, vingt-six ans plus tard. Les compléments ne sont pas des appendices mineurs : ils sont aussi longs que l'œuvre initiale, et on y lit souvent mieux ses idées, car il écrit alors sans avoir à convaincre personne de l'architecture. Il demandait lui-même qu'on lise l'ensemble deux fois.
